A HOUSING developer wants to add extra homes to a Wellington estate which is key to the town’s planned new railway station.

Bloor Homes has bought land behind the town’s Lidl supermarket where West of England Developments Ltd was given outline permission to build up to 200 homes and some employment units.

The company initially said only 161 properties would be built and none of them would be ‘affordable homes’ because it had to meet the cost of building an access road to the railway station site.

Now, Bloor has applied for detailed planning permission and said it wants to increase the number of homes by 17 to 178, but still 22 fewer than were originally approved.

The company also revealed a residents’ parking permit scheme would be implemented on the estate to discourage train station users parking in the nearby streets.

Bloor said it was able to fit in extra homes by increasing the density of the estate and using more semi-detached and terraced dwellings, as well as a block of flats.

CarneySweeney planning director Robin Upton said the new plans included some minor changes to the station access road running through the spine of the estate.

Mr Upton said the proposals closely resembled the approved outline plans with most of the homes two-storey in height, and some 2.5 storeys in ‘key focal locations’.

There would be a mix of three and four-bedroom family houses for open market sale ranging from starter homes to larger properties.

The homes would all be fitted with water and energy efficient fixtures and lighting through a combination of solar panels on roofs, improved roof and floor insulation, electric vehicle charging points, and waste water heat recovery systems.

Wellington town councillors will discuss the new proposals when they hold their first meeting of 2026, on Monday, January 5.
