TOWN centre safety railings which were demolished by an articulated lorry in Wellington more than a year ago have finally been replaced.

Highways engineers were seen on Christmas Eve putting the finishing touches to a new section of railing on the corner of North Street and Fore Street, outside the Wetherspoon public house.

A ‘straight’ section of railing was replaced earlier in the year but a curved length had to be custom made, resulting in a further lengthy delay.

Town councillors had expressed frustration at the length of time Somerset County Council was taking to repair the railings.

They were particularly upset because the damage was caused only a short time after the railings had been reinstated following an earlier incident of a lorry driving into them as it made the tight town centre turn into North Street.

One councillor told the Wellington Weekly: “I cannot help thinking that if this had happened in Taunton then the county would have had the repairs done in no time at all.

“It seems just because Wellington is a smaller community they do not give us any priority.

“But the risk of people having an accident is just as great here as it is elsewhere.”
