IMMEDIATE action to improve pedestrian safety on a road through Westford, Rockwell Green, has been demanded of Somerset Council.
The road from Westford Grange to the railway bridge does not have a secure pathway, leaving children and families to navigate the busy road at peak school times.
Residents have raised growing concerns about the risk of accidents, particularly during the morning and afternoon school run.
Now, local campaigner Andy Denison has written to highways bosses urging them to help create a safe walking route for children attending the local primary school.
He has asked for a representative to walk the route with him and discuss residents’ concerns directly, and explore realistic options based on the road layout.
Mr Denison, who is the Reform UK candidate in next week’s Rockwell Green by-election for a seat on Wellington Town Council, said: “Parents are deeply worried, and rightly so.
“Children should not be forced to walk along narrow, busy roads with no safe area to step aside from traffic.”
Mr Denison acknowledged the physical constraints in his letter to the highways department, but said practical solutions were still possible.
Even a clearly marked white line with pedestrian symbols, similar to Beech Grove, could provide some safety and act as a visual reminder for drivers to take extra care.
Mr Denison said the lack of safe pedestrian access not only put children at risk but also discouraged walking, which was vital for health, wellbeing, and reducing traffic congestion.
He said: “This is a community that cares deeply about its young people.
“We are asking Somerset Council to work with us, come and see the problem first-hand, and help deliver a solution that protects our children.”
By-election polling on Tuesday (February 10) is from 7 am to 10 pm, and other candidates are: Beth Hill (Labour), George Western (Liberal Democrat), and Edward Yates (Conservative).
