WELLINGTON Town Council could be getting more office space to help cater for the possible extra workload coming its way.

Councillors heard that a room next to the council office in Fore Street was to be vacated and presented the authority with an opportunity to take on the extra space.

Town clerk Kathryn Hemensley told councillors at their monthly meeting that Taunton Deane was ‘open to negotiations about the rent’ but suggested it would be in the region of £100 a month.

She advised them that there would be some legal costs involved along with heating and lighting expenditure while broadband and telephone services would need to be factored in.

But councillors felt it was too good an opportunity to turn down.

Cllr Mark Lithgow said: “We are a growing town and we might need extra staff in the future. We would be snookered if we didn’t take on this additional office.”

Cllr John Thorne said: “There is going to be a lot more responsibility coming to us and it is inevitable that we are going to need more staff.

“We need new council offices full stop – but this is a stop-gap measure.”

The council agreed that further negotiations be carried out into taking on the extra office.
