THE next workshop to discuss the formation of a ‘Wellington Emergency Plan’ will be taking place next week.

This follows a meeting on Monday, October 27, which discussed local flooding issues, wider emergency risks, mental health and community wellbeing.

During this meeting, issues were raised regarding ongoing flood concerns in Westford and Rockwell Green linked to housing development, a lack of communication with Somerset Council and Somerset Highways, and problems surrounding power outages, traffic safety, and road conditions.

Furthermore, there was a recognition that the town’s emergency plan must go beyond flooding to include severe weather, infrastructure failure, and any potential evacuation scenarios.

The upcoming emergency plan workshop will be held at United Reformed Church, Wellington, on Tuesday, November 18, between the hours of 6pm and 9pm.

This session will be a hands-on workshop led by the Emergency Volunteer Action Group (EVAG) and Somerset Council’s Emergency Planning Team.

It will include a practical show-and-tell demonstration of flood and emergency resilience equipment and an overview of how local emergency planning connects with wider county support.

There will also be a group discussion to draft key parts of Wellington’s Emergency Plan together, along with some activities that guests can participate in.

Wellington Town Council are encouraging as many people to attend the workshop as possible, hoping that their invitation to the event will be shared across networks, with neighbours, community groups, faith organisations, and clubs.

The council says that it is particularly keen to involve people who have a ‘community champion’ mindset and a can-do attitude.

A spokesperson also said that they would like to include people who “understand that in an emergency, everyone can play a role; whether through admin and logistical support, providing physical help, or offering comfort and care.”
