POLICE have ruled out arson following a fire in a block of flats in High Street, Wellington, on Sunday morning, in which four people were dramatically rescued.

Eight appliances and a hydraulic platform, plus firemen using breathing apparatus, were used to fight the fire in the stairwell of the building.

It is the biggest fire in the town since December, 2008, when two shops in Cornhill were severely damaged.

Crews from Wellington, Wiveliscombe, Taunton, Tiverton, Bridgwater, Ilminster and Cullompton were involved in Sunday's blaze.
