CHANGES are being made by Somerset Council to waste and recycling collections over the Easter bank holiday weekend.
Collections due on Good Friday (April 3) will instead take place on Saturday (April 4).
There will not be any collections on Easter Monday (April 6).
All collections during next week will then take place one day later than usual, with Friday collections happening on Saturday (April 11).
All of Somerset’s 16 recycling sites will also move to their spring and summer opening hours from Wednesday, April 1, and will then be open:
• Monday to Friday 9 am to 6 pm
• Weekends 9 am to 4 pm
Opening days vary at some sites during the week, but all sites are open on Saturdays and Sundays.
Residents are advised to check online for site opening days before visiting.
Recycling sites will remain open over the Easter weekend, from 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
To help the crews to complete collections as quickly as possible, residents are asked to put their boxes, bags, and bins out by 7 am on collection day, or on the night before.
A spokesperson said: “As collections are a day later than usual, higher volumes of waste are expected.
“Squashing, crushing, and flattening items can help create more space in containers and reduce the number of trips collection crews need to make.
The council tracks what happens after each tonne is collected or taken to recycling sites and is proud that in Somerset no recycling is burned, dumped, or ends up in the ocean.
It said in 2024-25 the crews collected 148,813 tonnes of waste, of which only 2,354 tonnes went to landfill, helping the county achieve a 55.45 per cent recycling rate.
