YOUNG readers are being challenged to go to the moon and beyond by Somerset Libraries this summer.

Space Chase is the theme of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge where youngsters sign up to read six books over their summer holidays in return for futuristic rewards.

Cllr David Hall, cabinet member with responsibility for libraries at Somerset County Council said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to inspire children to read – and I am sure the space theme will fire their imaginations.

“This year’s theme is inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing and the challenge invites primary school aged children to borrow and read six library books over the summer.”

As children read library books for the reading challenge, they will receive special stickers, some with mysterious smells. When they complete the challenge they will receive a medal for reading all six books.

Children can sign up at their nearest library and will be given bookmark to start their reading challenge journey. Space Chase launched in libraries across Somerset Libraries on Saturday and runs until September 7.

Libraries have a programme of events planned for families over the summer to celebrate the Summer Reading Challenge, including LEGO days, 3D printing, virtual reality, storytimes, treasure hunts and much more.
