A LOCAL school has been shortlisted for the 2026 Music and Drama Awards in the category of ‘Outstanding Drama Department’ - making them the only school in the South West to have been included.

This follows a number of award wins and nominations for Wellington School’s drama department over the past few years.

Run annually by the magazines Music Teacher and Drama & Theatre, the awards celebrate outstanding achievements in music and drama education, recognising the work and initiatives of schools, organisations, charities and individuals across the country.

The Wellington School submission for the awards celebrated both excellence and inclusivity, highlighting strong industry and agency links, alongside National Youth Theatre success.

Furthermore, they highlighted how they approached productions in a way that looks to inspire creativity at every level.

A spokesperson for Wellington School said: “To be recognised nationally as one of the country’s leading drama departments is an honour and a celebration of every student, teacher, and supporter who helps make the arts at Wellington so extraordinary.

“This prestigious award recognises an exemplary drama department that consistently goes above and beyond in the pursuit of excellence in drama provision.”

Winners will be announced at a live ceremony on Thursday, February 12, at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms, London.

Winners are chosen by a prominent panel of expert judges who would have the knowledge and expertise to reward the talent, projects, organisations, and products that have been shortlisted.

In order to win in the Outstanding Drama Department category, judges will look for evidence of exceptional provision.

They will also be looking at whether staff in the department go out of their way to ensure that a significant proportion of students benefit from access to drama and theatre opportunities in and out of school, allowing for financial and time constraints.
