PAUL Jones, the lead singer with 1960s’ band Manfred Mann who shot to fame with 5-4-3-2-1, the theme tune he helped to write for the cult pop music show Ready Steady Go, is coming to the Brewhouse with The Blues Band on Saturday (June 11).

During the time that Jones played with Manfred Mann he sang and played harmonica on hits such as Pretty Flamingo, Do Wah Diddy Diddy and The Mighty Quinn, all of which will feature on the night.

Since he departed from the band in 1966 Paul has enjoyed success as a solo performer and also appeared in films and television as well as hosting the Blues Programme on BBC Radio 2 for many years.

Back in 1979 along with Tom McGuiness who played bass guitar with Manfred Mann and subsequently had a hit with When I’m Dead and Gone, Paul Jones  formed The Blues Band.

Now after 43 years the Blues Band is calling it a day and the concert at the Brewhouse is part of their farewell tour.

“This is sadly the end of the Blues Band - we thought that 43 years was enough so we will be performing until early July.”

Reflecting on his 60 odd years in the music business Jones said: “I love doing it really and I’m grateful for being able to do it for this long.

“When I started out in my teens I thought wouldn’t it be great to make music and you took it up as a hobby, which is how it starts off. Then when you get good enough at it you do it for people to pay to see you and you start getting paid for your hobby and here I am 60 odd years later still getting paid for my hobby!“

What can those attending expect on the evening? “People can certainly expect to hear three number one Hits- Do Wah Diddy, Pretty Flamingo and also the Mighty Quinn and lots of other things.”

Jones added: “I like playing at venues like the Brewhouse where you can feel close to the audience and maybe interact a little bit more.”
