STAFF at a farm shop near Wellington are celebrating after winning a silver award for one of their marmalades at this year’s marmalade awards.

The Jam Kitchen at Rumwell Farm Shop won a Silver Award for its Glorious Grapefruit & Lemon Marmalade at The World’s Original Marmalade Awards in Cumbria.

Anne Mitchell, co-owner of the farm shop, on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington, said: “We’re ecstatic that we have been given a prestigious Silver Award for our home-made Glorious Grapefruit & Lemon Marmalade. We were also commended for our Orange & Brandy Marmalade and for our Chunky Cottage Marmalade.

“There were about 3,000 entries from as far afield as South Africa, Korea and Singapore, so it’s fantastic that our marmalades stood out.

“Our Glorious Grapefruit & Lemon Marmalade was created using an old family recipe from Liz Brown, our jam kitchen manager.

“The recipe was tweaked slightly and then produced by hand by Liz and her team in small batches. We would like to thank Liz for the time and effort she put into creating the award-winning marmalade.”

It was the 11th anniversary of the Dalemain Marmalade Awards & Festival, held at Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens, near Penrith. The World’s Original Marmalade Awards at the festival set a standard which is recognised internationally.

Every jar entered receives a judges’ tasting card with comments and a certificate. The marmalades are judged on appearance, colour, consistency, aroma and flavour.

The Jam Kitchen at Rumwell produces 50 products including jams, chutneys and marmalades, all made using fruit and vegetables from the shop.

Awards and festival organiser Jane Hasell-McCosh said: “We would like to congratulate Rumwell Farm Shop on its Silver Award. The standard of the competition this year was outstanding and we’re delighted that the awards continue to grow each year.”
