Concerns have been raised for the elderly travelling to Lidl as piles of fallen leaves and protruding brambles are obstructing the pavement along Taunton Road.

Christine Hayes, 83, of Wellington, travelled the route on Monday in preparation for the opening of the new Lidl supermarket. However she came into difficulty on the pavement, which is partially obstructed by piles of leaves and overgrown hedging.

Ms Hayes said: "I am so pleased Lidl is coming at last. "I walked down to try out the road with my carer and have just been disappointed because that pavement is not easy to walk down."

Ms Haye's carer, Davinia, added: "It needs sorting out. The pavement’s not a bad width but a huge amount of it is covered, plus all the brambles that you’re trying to avoid and the cars go quite fast and close in there."

The pair also came across and collected a significant amount of litter during their brief walk. Davinia estimated they had removed as many as 20 discarded drinks cans from the roadside.
