Four fire crews were sent to tackle a blaze in a flat in Wellington on Kelway Road in the Priory estate.

The town's two crews arrived first and found a fire in the ground floor kitchen of the flat in a block of four homes at around 11.40pm on Monday.

Two more crews were then sent from Taunton and Wiveliscombe. Firefighters using breathing apparatus tackled the fire, and used a thermal imaging camera.

Paramedics checked one occupant for the effects of breathing smoke. Everyone who lives in the block was accounted for and the fire was put out.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire Control received several calls to reports of a fire at a property in Wellington. Two fire engines from Wellington were sent initially and once in attendance, crews confirmed this to be a fire in the kitchen and requested a further two fire engines, one from Taunton and the other from Wivesliscombe.

"Crews got to work with two breathing apparatus wearers, one hose reel jet and a thermal imaging camera. An ambulance was requested from scene to check over one occupant, suffering with slight smoke inhalation.

"This was a fire in the ground floor kitchen of a flat, consisting of two floors, with four flats in the block. All persons were accounted for. The fire was extinguished using four breathing apparatus wearers, one hose reel jet, one safety jet and a thermal imaging camera.

"The kitchen suffered approx 10% fire damage and the rest of the property sustained approx 45% smoke damage. Ambulance attended to check over one occupant for smoke inhalation.The cause was accidental."

Earlier on Monday two crews from Wellington joined others from across Somerset to tackle a fire at a derelict building at East Brent, near Burnham-on-Sea.
