FOUR young men have been charged in connection with an alleged stabbing in Wellington three years ago.
The youths, all teenagers, three aged 18 and one 17-year-old, were listed to appear for the first time in Taunton Deane Magistrates Court on Thursday (April 30).
However, one failed to turn up and chairman of the bench Louisa Jacobs issued a warrant without bail for his arrest,
They were each charged in connection with an incident where a Wellington man was said to have been stabbed in the head while crossing Roly Poly Green, near Alexandra Road, on his way home in the early hours of Monday May 29, 2023.
A man was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, following the reported incident but was released later the same day.
A number of arrests were made by police in the subsequent days and officers said they were also aware of mobile phone footage which was circulating on social media.
The four youths were each charged with ‘unlawfully and maliciously wounding’ a man with ‘intent to do him grievous bodily harm’
One of the youths was separately charged with possessing a knife without good reason or lawful authority in a public place, namely Roly Poly Green.
Two of the 18-year-olds gave addresses in Taunton, while the address of the one who failed to appear was given as Exeter.
The 17-year-old’s address was given as Wellington.
At the time of the alleged offences the youths would have been 15 and 14 years old and the Wellington Weekly has chosen not to name them despite being able to do so once they became 18.
The magistrates committed the three who appeared before them to stand trial in Taunton Crown Court.
The youths were granted unconditional bail until a short hearing scheduled for June 1 when pleas would be taken and trial preparations started.
