THE first new-look town centre market day was being held in Wellington on Saturday (February 24).

Wellington Market has been rebranded by dropping ‘Produce’ from its title and moving it to High Street.

It saw an increase in market stalls from seven to 12 as well as a mobile coffee van as the road was closed to traffic for the day.

A new logo for the event was also created by Wellington baker Sara-Beth Rowland, of SB Bakes.

High Street will be closed on the last Saturday monthly to allow the market to take place between 9 am and 3 pm.

A produce market had been running in South Street for the past two years but Wellington Town Council agreed to move the location after complaints from two traders, one of whom later withdrew their opposition.

A spokesperson said: “We have dropped ‘produce’ from our name.

“We want to be able to attract as many stalls and local traders to join at the market and help make Wellington the place to be.

“Keeping ‘produce’ in our name could make some feel like they could not join the market as they do not sell farm produce.”

Any traders interested in joining the revitalised market should email [email protected].

High Street will be closed on two Saturdays in June when the town council also holds its annual street fair on the first Saturday with a 1940s theme to mark the start of a week of activities to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
