The Remembrance Sunday Service at Well-ington Park at the weekend was well attended by members of the public and organisations in the town.

It good to see all schools in Wellington well represented. In particular veterans and members of the British Legion would like to say a big thank you to the head boy and head girl from Rockwell Green Primary School for writing and reading out their own Remembrance prayers. Pupils from all the schools and the young people’s organisations laid their wreaths with great care and dignity. Many comments were made regarding the representation in our town by so many young people.

It is touching and heart-warming for the older generation to see the generosity of young people, who often get so much adverse publicity. As individuals and within their groups they were taking time to remember the sacrifices that had been made for the lifestyles and freedoms we all enjoy today.

Before the service people were able to see the display of hand-knitted and crocheted poppies by members of Wellington WI. These adorned the park and the Royal British Legion Wellington Garden of Remembrance in particular. The children from Bouncy Bear Childcare had also made hand-drawn poppies and put these in the garden.

Several standards were paraded and Taunton Deane MP Rebecca Pow, Mayor of Taunton Deane Borough Council Cllr Vivienne Stock-Williams and Wellington Mayor Cllr Bob Bowrah attended the service.

Wellington branch president Michael Rose, before dismissing the parade, thanked everyone for their attendance and for the excellent turn-out of those on parade.

Wellington branch chairman Ray Filler wishes to thank the RBL Riders Branch for their assistance in handing out service sheets before joining the parade to lay their wreath.

The branch is grateful to all the organisations which took part and supported the Service of Remembrance, the branch chaplain, Rev Tim Treanor, and Churches Together in Wellington for putting the service together, town clerk Greg Dyke for the production of the service sheets, and Wellington Silver Band for providing the music.

The branch would also like to thank the staff and parents from all the town schools, volunteers and leaders for enabling the young people to take an active role on the day and the people of Wellington, who so willingly support the Royal British Legion throughout the year and the remembrance parade and service every year without fail.
