A TOWERING planter – which has not been seen for a number of years – is all set to make a return to the Wellington street scene.
The eight feet tall monument planter, made by Reg Grabham and given to Wellington Town Council in the early 1990s, holds about 25 different size planters and had been a regular sight in the town centre.
Named because of its shape, it had been looked after by the former Somerset West and Taunton Council and planted every year, but in about 2018 when it did not appear because repairs were needed.
It was not until about six years later in 2024 that the town council started making noises about the planter and now it finally looks as if it will reappear … on the roundabout island at the entrance to the Longforth Farm estate on the approach to the town centre.
Members of the town council’s environment committee heard that the monument planter had been refurbished.
The council’s open spaces manager Darren Hill said: “This will improve the entrance to Wellington by re-homing the Wellington monument planter and some area of landscaping.”
A report said that a concrete pad will need to be installed to take the weight of the giant planter and then covered in gravel, while the planter itself will be bolted down.
Mr Hill said that Somerset Council had given its blessing for the project as it was responsible for highways.
“This will greatly improve the approach to Wellington and make a wonderful impact to residents and visitors to the town,” added Mr Hill. “This will also put the planter, which was made for the town, to good use in a new location where everyone will see it.”
Councillors heard the project would cost £7,500 and happen during the 2026-2027 financial year.
