SUPPORT has been offered by local councillors to give six students from Court Fields School in Wellington a chance of enjoying some adventure.

Members of Wellington Town Council’s policy and finance committee agreed to award a £1,720 grant to the Youth Adventure Trust.

Councillors were told the organisation used outdoor adventure and one-to-one support to empower young people to fulfil their potential and lead positive lives in the future.

The money will be used to help give six vulnerable young people from Court Fields an opportunity to build resilience, develop confidence and self-esteem, learn valuable life skills and achieve their full potential by attending residential camps and activity days.

“We are not the whole journey for them, but we are the start,” said a spokesperson for the Youth Adventure Trust. “Our aim is to inspire these young people.”

Cllr Justin Cole said: “We should do this and get this scheme launched in Wellington and then encourage the organisation to work us so we can help to take it forward.”

Cllr Andy Govier, who was also in support of the initiative, said: “If we can make a positive change on just one person - £1,700 would be a big saving to the public purse in the long-run.”

Councillors were told that the children would be referred to the Youth Adventure Trust by Court Fields School.

The organisation has been helping young people since 1992 and the adventure programmes enables them to challenge themselves, experience success, learn to go beyond their own expectations and grow in confidence.

The Youth Adventure Trust spokesman added: “Our aim is to make a lasting improvement to the lives of vulnerable young people.”

And Cllr John Thorne said: “This could provide amazing opportunities for the children involved.”

Councillors voted in support of the grant application.
