ACTION on Hearing Loss (formerly RNID) is urging local people to join the charity’s volunteer team in Wellington to help deliver a new hearing aid support service for people who are deaf or have a hearing loss.
The new Hear to Help service set to open later this month will help people make the most out of their hearing aids by offering advice and practical support, such as re-tubing and new batteries.
It will allow NHS hearing aid users to access vital maintenance closer to home than the hospital, saving them time and giving them a chance to get valuable, personal guidance from trained volunteers who run the service.
Action on Hearing Loss is urging local people to get in touch if they can give two hours of their time each month to start delivering this support. The charity will provide training and guidance for volunteers, regular support meetings, equipment, expenses, opportunities to develop new skills and the chance to meet other like-minded people.
Karen Squire, regional information officer for the South-West region at Action on Hearing Loss, said: “We’re looking for enthusiastic people of any age to join us and use their time, skills and talent to support the one in six people living with hearing loss in the county. This role is really practical and not only offers the chance for people to make a positive impact in the everyday lives of those in their
communities but also make new friends and enjoy fun and rewarding experiences.
“Our volunteers bring energy and commitment to Action on Hearing Loss, and volunteering can make a positive difference in their own lives too, helping them to gain valuable experience which can help them in the future.”
The drop-in clinic will be based in a local community space within Wellington for two hours each month.
