ARMISTICE Day saw about 25 people gather at Hemyock’s war memorial for a short service taken by the Rev John Stone as the village observed the national two-minute silence.

The following day a large congregation gathered at St Mary’s parish church, Hemyock, for the annual Remembrance service, again led by Rev Stone.

The church choir, followed by uniformed youth groups, led members of the public from the parish hall to the church where a pulpit full of poppies was on display. The church gate and war memorial wall had been adorned with hand-crafted poppies made by members of the local Women’s Institute.

The service ended with wreaths being laid by representatives of the parish council, scout group, brownies and primary school. Tim Barton gave the exhortation and the two-minute silence was observed.

The collection in aid of the Royal British Legion amounted to more than £512 – an increase of about £70 on last year.
