BONFIRE Night at Wiveliscombe War Memorial Recreation Ground on Friday produced a spectacular fireworks display.
Hundreds of people went to watch and support the war memorial and local sports clubs on a dry, clear evening. Off-duty and former Fire Service personnel somehow improved on last year’s brilliant display.
The rugby club offered burgers, hot dogs and chips, tea and coffee from the kitchen, stalls of cakes from the tennis club and sweets from the swimming pool. Local businesses gave more than £400 of raffle prizes, including a free MOT from Country Cars & Vans, meals at the Bear and White Hart etc. Free raffle tickets were issued to all adult paying entrants and further tickets were sold during the event.
Chris Hendy, chairman of the war memorial management committee, said: “Last year was brilliant, this year was even better. A big thank you to all who helped on the evening, the volunteers who work tirelessly setting up, running stalls, kitchen, organising the building and supervising of the bonfire etc and clearing up after the event.
“The majority of people used the sparkler area, which helped with collection and safety. Thanks also go to the local clubs and businesses which supported us this year. Bonfire Night is the Rec’s main annual fundraiser and without it we wouldn’t be able to maintain the facility.”
