CHILDREN from Court Fields Community Pre-School have been learning to love books with a little help from students at the senior school.

Students were invited to share stories with the children in the senior school’s library during World Book Week and the session went so well Reading Together sessions have been taking place weekly since then.

Pre-school manager Sheryl Higgs said: “Students from Court Fields spend time reading to pre-school children, supporting literacy skills and developing confidence. Our children look forward to this time in the library sharing stories.”

The pre-school also asked for student volunteers to play with its children during the lunch break – the pre-school felt the children could benefit from positive student role models and the interaction.

It was also felt the students could develop their communication and life skills by volunteering – 35 students went in for sessions and ten have been selected to go in one lunch break a week over the coming summer term.

Sheryl added: “We were thrilled that so many wanted to take up this opportunity in their free time and it was so difficult to make the selection. All the students were positive, polite and engaging with our children. I think this represents the positive energy and image of Court Fields students we see on a daily basis.

“We also continue to accept students undertaking the childcare development qualification within the school from Years 10 and 11. We are very proud of the partnership working currently being embedded with the school.”
