A major road in Wellington has been closed for the weekend to allow works by Wessex Water to take place.
The bridge over the railway at Tonedale was closed off with signs and bollards on Saturday morning.
Pedestrians are allowed to walk across, but vehicles are stopped from crossing, with diversions in place.
One person in the area described the traffic on side roads as "horrendous", and said that local businesses would be suffering a loss of trade due to the Saturday closure.
Signs have been put up at the closure saying local businesses are still open. One sign said: "Businesses open as usual. Please continue to support the local community".
The section of Milverton Road, also known as the B3187, will also be closed on Sunday. Signs say the work is being carried out by Wessex Water.
Real-time traffic monitoring on Saturday morning showed congestion on the approach to the bridge from the direction of Milverton, including around the One Stop shop.
The road is a key route to the village and onwards to Wiveliscombe. There were reports of motorists unaware of the closure having to reverse away from the location.
One person reported in a Facebook comment: "Burchills Hill from Tone to RWG is a complete nightmare with people who can’t reverse, avoid it if I were you".
Travel Somerset warned that delays in the area are likely. It said the road will be closed on on Saturday and Sunday, March 4 and 5. The works are being carried out by Wessex Water "for a new connection standard".
