WELLINGTON'S east beat Police Community Support Officer Nick Barber has set up a new Neighbourhood Watch scheme in the town.

The scheme, which has been up and running for a week, is at Kelway Road, Wellington and is proving very popular with the residents.

Talking about the scheme, Nick said: "It is a good thing for everyone. "It means that people in the commuity are all looking out for each other.

"I am trying to set up more Neighbourhood Watch schemes around the area and would be happy to discuss proposals with any residents who are interested."

He said the idea behind the Neighbourhood Watch scheme was to bring the commuity together to prevent crime.

"It enables the police to work well with the community by residents keeping an eye out for anti-social behaviour and suspicious incidents," said Nick.

"The scheme also helps to bring the community and police force together by forging a link.

"One of the main benefits of starting a scheme in a residential area is for the prevention of burglaries and other crime," he added.

PCSO Nick Barber has also arranged to make regular visits to the Northfield Community Centre at Lodge Close in Wellington to spend some time with the elderly residents.

"I'm hoping to be able to chat with the residents and discuss any concerns they may have," he said.
