WELLINGTON Vets beat their Wellesley Park counterparts 2-0 in the Neil Jenkinson Memorial Football Match on the all-weather pitch at Wellington School on Sunday afternoon, writes Barry Knott.

It was appropriate that Neil’s son Richard should put Wellington ahead from the penalty spot in the second half. Terry Coppin clinched victory with a goal towards the end.

What delighted many of the crowd was the extra weight some of the former players have put on over the years – it certainly made me feel much better about myself.

All proceeds from the event, organised by Jason Hawkings, will go to St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice and the final total will be announced at the club’s annual dinner on Saturday.

Neil gave more than 50 years of devoted service to the club, first as a player and then as a committee member. He died at the beginning of this year at the age of 72 after a long illness.
