COUNCILLORS are seeking to drive forward plans to bring a Post Office back to Wellington.

Members of Wellington Town Council have grown tired of hoping a new Post Office will open in the town.

So they are looking into setting up their own branch of the Post Office and are considering using the former Somerset West and Taunton Council community office building adjoining the town council offices.

A meeting of the town council’s Post Office Sub-Group – made up of councillors Andy Govier, Nancy Powell-Brace, Sean Pringle-Kosikowsky and John Thorne – met last month and further discussions took place at Wellington Town Council’s latest meeting.

Cllr Thorne, speaking via Zoom conferencing technology, said: “Getting a Post Office back in Wellington is not going to happen unless the town council makes it happen.

“The Somerset West and Taunton community office is considered to be the outstanding unused premises in the town centre suitable to accommodate a Post Office and has the advantage of being able to provide solutions for other town council issues.”

Cllr Thorne said the council itself would not necessarily operate the Post Office but look at appointing someone else in to run it.
