NEW gates at the exit of the South Street, Wellington, car park have delighted one town resident and her wheelchair-bound daughter.

Catherine Lockyer, of Beech Hill, called for rusty padlocked gates to be replaced at a town council meeting last autumn.

Mums and dads and people pushing wheelchairs had to mount a narrow stretch of pavement to get out onto South Street or go down a narrow alley at the side of the Co-op to get onto Fore Street and the town centre.

Thanks to new gates installed by Taunton Deane Borough Council Catherine and her daughter Joy Rigby, of Lodge Close, now find it much easier to get into and out of the car park. Catherine said: “It’s fantastic – it’s a 150 per cent improvement.”
