PLANS to build a home in Lodge Close, Wellington, were recommended for refusal when Wellington Town Council held its latest planning meeting.

Work has already started on the property, which would be called Lodge Bungalow, and which Cllr Andrew Govier said would more accurately said to be at the back of North Street, behind Dominoes fish and chip shop.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Mark Lithgow said the property was being ‘shoehorned’ into the site. “Words fail me on how they think they can squeeze a house in there,” he said.

Cllr Govier echoed those comments and said he had been against a previous proposal for one home on the site, which had been approved.

He added: “I think it’s over-development and I think they have gone on to build it, hoping nothing will happen and it will be allowed to remain.”

Cllr John Thorne said the plans were the equivalent of trying to get a ‘quart into a pint pot’ on a tiny, odd-shaped and difficult site. He also queried the garden space and the amount of parking.

Councillors recommended the proposals are refused by Somerset West and Taunton Council, which will make the final decision.
