POLICE in Wellington have appealed for witnesses after a man was attacked in North Street in the town leaving him needing eight stitches in a head wound.

The attack took place in the early hours of Saturday near Jubilee Gardens.

The 29-year-old also suffered a swollen jaw and small cuts to his face in the attack, which happened between 1.45am-2.10am.

Police say there were a number of people in the area at the time the assault took place.
