A COUNCILLOR has called on the police to ask if they can do anything to deter late-night anti-social driving in Wellington town centre.

There have been a number of comments placed on local social media pages about drivers racing up and down through the town in cars and causing unnecessary noise for local people.

And Cllr Andrew Govier, speaking at Wellington Town Council’s monthly meeting on August 3, took the opportunity to raise the problems with Sgt Jon O’Connor.

“There have been a lot of comments on social media about anti-social behaviour and cars being driven fast up and down the town centre late at night,” said Cllr Govier.

He said he appreciated it was “difficult to police” because of resources and being in the right place at the right time, but asked Sgt O’Connor if anything could be done.

Sgt O’Connor said getting registration numbers of the offending vehicles or mobile phone footage would be ideal, while they could also check town centre CCTV.

And he added: “The more evidence I can give our traffic department, the better, as I’ll be able to ask if they can come and have a look.”

Anti-social behaviour is a key priority for police within the town, and Sgt O’Connor has told councillors that officers have increased patrols of local open spaces now that the school summer holidays are in “full swing.”

Sgt O’Connor said that his team would be taking “every opportunity” to attend local activities being put on for young people over the summer.

“This allows us to spread some key messaging, but also to have some meaningful engagement with young people to prevent crime and tackle anti-social behaviour,” he said.

Sgt O’Connor added: “If people do have questions, please feel free to stop any of us while we’re out on patrol, and we’ll always be happy to speak with you.”
