CHILDREN at Sampford Arundel and Wellesley Park primary schools are the latest in the Wellington area to join the Somer- set Children's University.

They are getting their own 'Passport to Learning' and will 'collect' hours of learning towards nationally recognised certificates for completing 30, 65 and 100 hours of learning outside school hours as part of the scheme.

Students will receive certificates and medals at graduation ceremony on completion of the hours. Eileen Coombes, Somerset Children's University manager said: The Children's University is a national organisation that recognises the achievements of young people aged five-14 who take part in activities outside normal school hours.

"The aim is to raise the aspirations of our young people by introducing them to a wide range of learning opportunities and a love of lifetime learning.

"Most activities already offered at schools out of school hours can be 'validated' as Children's University modules, as long as learn- ing and skill development is taking place.

"We include any activity which is about learning, raises aspirations and broadens pupils' horizons, and enhances confidence.

"The range of activities could include gardening and nature

trails, dance work shops and cookery clubs.

"We will also validate time spent at visitor attractions focused on learning such as museums, stately homes and out- door activity centres."

She added: "The scheme is designed to increase pupils' interest in learning, and give them new opportunities to find out about new topics or try new activities."
