A BANNED driver has been jailed for eight weeks for driving while disqualified, crashing his car near Wiveliscombe and fleeing the scene.

Ashley Leatherland has also been ordered to pay compensation for filling up with petrol and driving off without paying on three separate occasions.

Leatherland, 22, who gave his address as Orchard Cottage, Brushford, when he appeared at Taunton Magistrates Court, ditched his car after the accident on the B3227 near Wiveliscombe.

He had only recently been banned from driving and was tracked down by police following the incident on April 1.

As well as his jail sentence, Leatherland, who admitted the offence, must also pay £50 costs and was handed six points on his licence.

He also pleaded guilty to three separate charges of bilking – driving off without paying for petrol – two of them at Wheddon Cross, the other in Taunton.

Although the court did not hand him any further penalty, Leatherland, who was charged under the Theft Act, was ordered to pay a total of £94.36 in compensation.

He received no further penalty for an offence of driving without insurance.
