Five Year 6 pupils from Beech Grove Primary School in Wellington took part in the Somerset Children’s Parliament at the council chamber at Shire Hall in Taunton against six other schools.

They had given up lots of their own lunchtimes since Christmas to prepare a five-minute speech and non-computer based visual presentation on their chosen subject, the Civic Award.

They explained how Wellington Town Council supports the project based on four aspects – physical skill, non-physical skill, school responsibilities and wider community service. The Mayor presents the award in July.

The school thanks SAPHTO – Somerset Association of Primary Headteachers and Officers – for organising this experience for pupils in the county.

Mrs Keates was impressed by the pupils’ commitment to the project giving up so much of their own time to produce a powerful meaningful, quality presentation.
