CHILDREN at Milverton Primary School have made a four-and-a-half metre long concrete squirrel they have named ‘Professor Acorn’ to enhance the school grounds.
Pupils worked with artist Bozena Nesporova on the project, using materials and techniques often deemed too risky for children in a closely controlled environment.
The project will help the school achieve its Artsmark Award, a creative quality standard for schools accredited by Arts Council England.
Year 3 teacher and arts co-ordinator Cat Smith said: “The children had the valuable experience of working alongside a talented artist, whose vision, enthusiasm and expertise have allowed the children’s ideas to develop into reality.”
Headteacher Richard Stead said: “We are delighted to show our pledge to the arts in our curriculum by creating this permanent interactive structure.
“The children of Milverton School will be able to play with it and remember their experience of creating it. It also enhances our beautiful school grounds and will be there for future generations of Milverton School pupils.”
RGB Building Supplies in Wiveliscombe, Travis Perkins in Wellington and Wellington Tiles supplied materials.
