Gilbert and Sullivan’s popular comic operetta, Trial by Jury, about a breach of promise lawsuit, had its premiere in London in March 1875.

Four days later, at Monmouth Assizes, a real life breach of promise case began. This real life case proved to be just as farcical as the one portrayed in Gilbert and Sullivan’s work.

The similarities of the way the two plots unfold is the subject of a forthcoming illustrated talk by John Porter.

The talk today (Thursday) at 7.30pm in Wellington Prep School Hall, South Street, is in aid of Wellington Local History & Museum Society. Entry is £3, or £2 for Society members.
