RETIRED Wellington teacher, Richard Fox is to be the first to be awarded the title of Honorary Freeman of Wellington by the town council.

The award is being made in recognition of his devotion to volunteering in Wellington and the surrounding area.

Paying tribute to Mr Fox's work in the community, Town Mayor Andy Govier said: "The council had given this new power some consideration and felt that Richard would be a most worthy recipient of this honour."

A special council meeting will be held on Sunday, January 30 in St John's Parish Church, High Street at 2.30pm, when Richard, 72, will be awarded Freedom of Wellington, and members of the public are invited to attend.
