WELLINGTON footpath volunteer co-ordinator Steve Saunders has been named as a recipient of this year’s Chairman’s Award from Somerset Council.

The mayor, Cllr Janet Lloyd, made the announcement during Wellington Town Council’s environment committee on September 17.

“I’m delighted to announce that Steve has been nominated for a Chairman’s Award at Somerset Council in recognition of his services to the community,” she said.

“Congratulations Steve – thank you for all you have done for the town.”

Councillors gave Mr Saunders a well-deserved round of applause before he then gave his regular update to the council about the upkeep and maintenance of footpaths in Wellington.

Only earlier this month he received the annual Civic Award from the mayor on behalf of Wellington Town Council in recognition of his tireless work with a number of groups to improve the local community – he does a lot of work with the volunteer group at the Basins Nature Reserve.

Now Mr Saunders will be heading to the Somerset Council ceremony on October 10 at Taunton Rugby Club where he will receive another gong - his richly-deserved Chairman’s Award from council chairman Cllr Mike Best. He will be joined by dozens of other worthy award recipients from around the county.

The award recipients have been nominated by their parish and town councils for recognition of their outstanding contribution to their communities and will be presented with a signed certificate and gift by Cllr Best followed by a buffet reception to celebrate their achievements.

“It’s one of the best aspects of this role, to be able to hear stories of – and recognise – dedication, hard work and selflessness from Somerset residents, who clearly love and take pride in their communities,” said Cllr Best. “Every recipient has made a real difference to their communities and it’ll be a real privilege to thank them.”
