THE National Trust had a stand outside the post office in High Street, Wellington, during a fundraising initiative.
Supporters of the campaign to raise money to help restore the monument had been encouraged to wear wellies to school or work in return for a suggested donation of £1. Visitors to the stand could ask about the appeal and make donations.
The monument was built to honour the Duke of Wellington – often credited with the invention of wellington boots – following his victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
