A WELLINGTON single mum struggling with the spiralling cost of living, has set up a charity to help others like her get through this winter.

Sophie Prouse, 33, lives in Wellington with her three-year-old daughter Lola (pictured together).

Struggling with the cost of essentials herself, being forced to make ‘hard decisions’ between the cost of essentials and household bills, Sophie turned to a local charity, the Best Before Food Store.

And now the vital help she received has inspired Sophie to set up her own charity, Helping Hands, to help families in need of support.

“My goals are to be able to provide in-need families with a safe area to ask for help, no judgement, just support, Sophie said.

“So many families struggle on the very little benefits money they receive,

“I have struggled to pay bills and balance my money but I’ve been very fortunate to have the help of the Best Before Food Store. With the cost of produce and essentials rising you have to make hard decisions as to what you can and cannot afford.

“One of the largest expenses with young children is nappies, toilet rolls, shampoo, toothbrushes, shower gel and feminine hygiene products. If I can help families with essentials that are crucial that’s all that matters.”

Sophie said she is planning to have a designated drop off point for donations at Court Fields Pre-School in Wellington.
