COUNTRY comes to the West Country next week when Taunton Amateur Operatic Society presents ‘9 to 5: The Musical’ at The Brewhouse Theatre.

The story, with words and music by Dolly Parton and based on the Queen of Country’s debut movie from 1980, follows three female office workers as they battle for recognition in a male chauvinist world. Besides the title song there are plenty of toe-tapping numbers and heart-rending ballads.

All three of the women have to overcome their own form of adversity on their way to equality and liberation. Silvey Webber’s secretary Doralee, the role originally played by Parton, struggles to be seen as anything more than a pretty face and a curvy figure. Violet (Alison Jenkinson) is the efficient doyen of the office who keeps being overlooked for promotion while Judy (Clare Brimble) takes her first ever job after her husband left her for his teenage secretary.

The three are united in their desire to overthrow lecherous bigot company president Franklin J Hart, played by David Duthie.

The show runs from Monday-Saturday, April 24-29 and tickets are available from The Brewhouse box office (phone 01823 283244).
