A view of South Street in Wellington probably taken in about 1900 after a considerable fall of snow.

The building on the corner of Fore Street was then Gratton’s - a milliner’s and draper’s shop, as advertised in the recesses over the door.

It became a bank in 1921. The bank closed in 2017 - the building is now a solicitor’s office with the upper floors converted to flats.

On the left, the third shop along has Shapland on its fascia board.

Although the lantern street light on the corner of High Street has disappeared, the rest of the street frontage is readily recognisable and the iron street name plates for Fore Street and High Street are still in place - all 120 years later.
