COUNTY council plans to cut speed limits on the A38 from Wellington to Taunton and along Wellington Relief Road have been opposed by one of the town’s county councillors.

Cllr John Thorne, who is also a town councillor, has formally objected to the proposals, which would see three-quarters of the journey to Taunton made 40mph and relief road traffic speed reduced to 30mph.

There were mixed views when Wellington Town Council was consulted on the A38 proposal, while West Buckland Parish Council said it supported reducing the speed limit.

But Cllr Thorne said: “These proposals have not been properly thought through and will not actually help to resolve the recognised safety problems on the A38 to Taunton.

“I am very disappointed with the way our usually excellent highways officers have brought forward these proposals.

“They are trying to take the easy way out of a difficult situation and instead of tackling issues such as the dangerous Heatherton Grange crossroads and congestion at Chelston roundabout, they want a universal speed cut.

“If they are allowed to get away with this, then we will not get the safety measures we actually need on the A38.”
