THE iconic World War 2 Spitfire fighter plane could soon be seen in the skies above Wellington.

Spitfire experience flights, which give thrill-seekers and aviation fans the opportunity to catch a ride in the historic jets, are set to return to Dunkeswell Aerodrome in May.

The aerodrome, which is nestled in the Blackdown hills, was constructed during World War 2 when it served as an RAF base. Today it provides a number of aerobatic activities, such as wing-walking and sky-diving.

The Spitfires’ return follows an extremely popular outing by the jets at Dunkeswell last year, when they put on a display to mark the former airfield’s 80th birthday and drew massive crowds, with many eager to hitch a ride.

Over Dunkeswell's extended birthday weekend the historic planes were seen flying over the Blackdown Hills and circling above the Wellington area.

Operators, Spitfires.com, have now confirmed they will return to Dunkeswell in May, operating flights on the May 20-21. It is understood Spitfire flights will also be taking off from the aerodrome on June 17-18 July 22-23 in addition to dates in August, September and October.

On the Sptfires.com website, the operators even offer the opportunity for people to try the controls and to fly above your home, adding: “We will do everything we can to fly over your house or important location if it's close enough. You'll have the chance to take the controls yourself and actually fly the Spitfire.”
