DESPITE grey skies and some rain, Wellington Street Fair was another resounding success with thousands flocking to the town on Sunday.

The event – run by volunteers – is the main fundraiser for Wellington Carnival and raised about £2,500, the same as last year.

“I woke up in the morning and heard the weather forecast and thought it was going to be a disaster,” said Wellington Carnival chairperson Sharon Collins.

“I thought it was going to chuck it down but, no, the showers went away and, if anything, we had the same numbers as last year.

“We had 40 stallholders and 20 were turned away. Now we have to seriously consider making it even bigger next year. It’s the next logical step. We have to see how it can be done.

“We had 54 donations for the committee’s raffle from various businesses – both from Wellington and Taunton – and this alone raised £300.”

Fair-goers could enjoy plenty of food and all sorts of music throughout the day, with the gospel singers in South Street drawing a big crowd.

“The atmosphere of the event was amazing and very positive,” added Sharon.

“It panned out so well that we were able to open the roads to South Street and High Street right on time at 6pm.”

New Wellington Mayor Cllr Janet Lloyd officially opened the event and Terry Milton provided the bunting.

There will be no Carnival Queen or attendants at this year’s carnival in September.
