FAMILY-run Wellington micro dairy the Milk Shed has won big in the revived 2025 Taste of the West Awards.

Husband and wife team Mark and Nicky Dunster were named 2025 champions in the category for best non-cheese dairy for their farm fresh unhomogenised milk.

The couple started their business in Haywards Lane, Chelston, in 2021 and previously won Taste of the West gold awards in 2023 for their traditional fresh cream, and in 2024 for fresh pasteurised whole milk.

To win the award, the Milk Shed entry was assessed against criteria including appearance, aroma, texture, flavour, technical skill and overall balance, labelling and allergens, sustainability, consistency, shelf stability, and packaging, where relevant.

The awards scheme went into administration last year but was rescued by a consortium of business people who relaunched it as a community interest company.

The 2025 winners were announced last week during an evening of celebration and achievement in the Westpoint Arena, Exeter.

Director Chris Milton said: “The organisation exists to champion the people who make the Westcountry one of the most extraordinary food and drink regions in the world, guided by principles of service, sustainability, and long-term benefit to the community.

“Through rigorous judging and independent assessment, the awards recognise excellence, innovation, and quality across retail, production, and hospitality sectors.”

The awards evening featured representatives of 200 award-winning producers, retailers, hospitality operators, and industry leaders helping to showcase regional talent.

Fellow director Charles Baughan, of Westaway Sausages, said: “The South West continues to set the benchmark for quality, creativity, and community in food, drink, and hospitality.

“This evening celebrated the people behind these remarkable businesses, their commitment, innovation, and unwavering passion for excellence.

“Every winner and finalist here represents the very best of what our region has to offer, and we are incredibly proud to recognise their achievements.”
