CHILDREN in Year 3 and 4 at Beech Grove Primary School in Wellington have been learning about the Seaton Hoard – 22,888 Roman coins discovered on the coast of Devon by a metal detector enthusiast in 2013.

The nearest coin today to the Roman coins is the modern penny and it took six pupils – in front of a whole-school assembly – to lift the same number of coins as in the hoard.

In a workshop, youngsters had a go at archaeological digging using a metal detector. They also played a matching game using Roman artefacts and made replica Roman coins. Darius the Roman told everyone a story about his life.

Youngsters are pictured enjoying their ‘Roman Day’.
