A NEW Year’s appeal has been launched to cover the cost of repairs to the ageing church clock in Milverton.

The clock in the tower of the 13th century St Michael’s Church has been failing to re-set itself whenever an issue occurs, such as a power cut or other mishap.

An investigation by the village rector the Rev Helene Stainer has shown the solution is to install a new piece of technology.

But, the cost of engineering the equipment has been estimated at between £1,500 and £2,000.

Now, Ms Stainer has launched a ‘Time Tech’ project to raise the necessary funds for the repair.

She said: “We would love to receive donations to the old clock in need of new bits.”

Ms Stainer said cheques could be made out to ‘Milverton PCC’ and cash or requests for bank details for transfers should go through the parish office in the vicarage barn.

Anybody who wanted to donate by card could use the card reader in the church and make a note of the amount and their identity and put the details in the white post box, so Ms Stainer would know what the donation was for.

St Michael's, which is a grade one listed building, is noted for its fine carved pew ends, seating for 350 people, and its Lady Chapel with a candle stand for prayer.
