MICK Gough and Duncan Short, two of Wellington’s best known sporting personalities, have died in recent days.

Mick, possibly the most gifted player to play football for Wellington, died at Musgrove Park Hospital after a long illness at the age of 70, while Duncan, president of the local cricket club, died suddenly aged 72.

WWN sports reporter Barry Knott, who knew both men very well, said: “It has been a very, very sad week for the town. Both contributed immensely to Wellington sport in different ways but had very different personalities. They will not be forgotten – they were larger than life characters.”

Mick Gough, who had lived in Milverton for several years, was a talented striker who scored plenty of stylish goals, a fine skittler for Soccerites, and a good all-rounder with Bell Green Cricket League.

He leaves two grown-up sons, Karl, 31, and Shaun, 29, following a relationship with a former partner, Fiona McLaren.

Duncan was chairman of Wellington Cricket Club for 17 years before becoming president. He was a hard-working and popular chairman and always had time for players and supporters.

He was also involved in the Taunton and District Youth Cricket for many years.

He leaves a widow Judith and three grown-up sons – Richard, Alec and Paul.
