WELLINGTON’S North Street car park – the most heavily used in the town – is to partially close for four days later this month for an extensive overhaul.

A large section of the car park will be resurfaced. The existing surface is being removed and a 70mm layer – almost twice the depth of normal surfacing – laid. The extra depth will make the car park far more resilient to the wear and tear of traffic.

North Street car park has suffered from a poor surface, made worse by drivers who use the area as a ‘rat-run’ or cut-through. It is that section that is being upgraded.

Signs warning of the impending short-term closure will go up this week and the work is set to start on Tuesday, April 18.

Alternative parking can be found in South Street and Longforth Road and the advisory signs will make drivers aware of the options.

A spokesman for Taunton Deane Borough Council said: “We are aware that the partial closure will cause inconvenience for drivers but it is only for four days and the new surface will be a significant improvement.

“All car parks suffer wear and tear but the damage in the North Street car park has been made worse as some motorists use it as a cut-through. The surface was never designed to be as resilient as a normal road.”
