ONE of the councillors for Rockwell Green ward on Wellington Town Council has resigned for what are said to be ‘personal reasons’.

Bill Sparrow, who was on the council for five years, has also resigned from the Labour Party.

Town clerk Greg Dyke said Mr Sparrow had told him he was going to quit the council last Wednesday and confirmed his resignation in writing.

Mr Dyke said: “What he has described as a change in personal circumstances has led him to resign as a councillor.”

Mr Dyke said an election could be held to fill the council vacancy if ten people asked for a poll and candidates came forward, or a replacement could be co-opted onto the council.

Mr Sparrow’s biography on the town council website says he worked in local government in Cumbria as a management services officer and later in consultancy in the public and private sectors. He also served in the RAF for five years. He moved to Rockwell Green in 2000.
